Thomas Brasch’s Artist Statement

“Out of the Darkness” is a series of commemorative, documentary and aesthetically pleasing works based on how cities heal after a tragedy. Each creation is a manipulation of a single rectangular source image which is captured, site specific, in the different cities represented. The image undergoes a transformation of multiple iterations and layering in order to create the vibrant geometry, representative of our collective humanity.

This is not about the tragedy. It is about the commemoration, the healing and celebration. We are not allowing the events, the names nor the repercussions to be forgotten. “We will not let hate win” is the motto for the Orlando Pulse memorial. We are each other. We are the person who is seated beside us, we are the person who is seated across the room, and we are any person around the globe who feels love and feels the pain of loss. Humanity will survive.

How do we save the light of the ones we lost and of those who are forever marked by the event? How do we find that courage and resilience to continue? Moreover, how do we dispel the darkness? The circle is a line without a beginning or end. It can be seen as a symbol of wholeness and perfection, or of power, motion and time.

This series, Out of the Darkness, provides an intelligent way of initiating a discussion on the tragedies of random violence without the use of representational graphic imagery. In these images, we see beyond the chaos and destruction and find a way to reconnect with ourselves, with each other and with our living spaces.

Each piece is titled by the city and the date of the event. It is up to the viewer to discover the connections. Each piece is a 40″x40″ limited edition of 6.

Thomas Brasch (B.A, B.Ed. MBA) has devoted twenty-eight years to education. However, his passion for photography drives his creative expression. Completely self-taught in the art, he is able to showcase his perceptions of beauty, turning the real into surreal. His images have been juried in multiple shows and selected for several private collections.
