Laara Cassell  Artist Statement

I paint figuratively in series of paintings using acrylics on canvas. I have a theme in mind and take many photographs to work from as I work out how the composition will best express my idea. The visual layout and variations of texture and lighting are resolved on the computer before the image is committed to canvas. In this series entitled “_after”, historical portraits, ranging from 1460 up to 1907, are integrated with contemporary subjects to create a series of double portraits. Stylistically the paintings are mostly inspired by European society portraits, which, like the modern Facebook page, often present an idealized version of the individual. I wish to comment on the differences in lifestyle over the centuries despite the enduring similarities in genetics.

In addition to portraiture, Laara Cassells is interested in “conceptual realism” in which she is able to transform the reality of a representational work to embrace broader social issues. Her series “_after”, “estrange” as well as the sculptural installation “Body Politic” fall into this category. Painting in acrylics on canvas, her social themes deal with feminine identity as well as the influence of modern technology on interpersonal communications. Winner of a 1st Prize Solo Exhibition in Milan, Italy in 2017, Laara has also shown in Monaco, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, South Korea, and across the USA and Canada.
