David Levy‘s Biography

Born in New York City, David was immersed in a world of creativity and art from the very beginning. His mother’s imagination was endless, as she routinely spent her time painting in oils, creating enamel jewelry, and designing her own clothing. Growing up in such a creative environment influenced David greatly. As a teenager, he majored in high school art while dreaming of furthering his art education at the Philadelphia Museum College of Art. His father, however, had other ideas for his future and rejected David’s aspirations for an art education.

This change of direction led David to The Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences, and upon graduation, he joined the advertising industry as an art director. His career in advertising soared, culminating in building his own ad agency. He spent several decades consumed professionally with creative expression, print design, photography, television and film production, garnering more than 300 creative awards while honing his entrepreneurial skills. But his dream of practicing art never escaped his mind and in 2015, David sold his business to become what he always dreamed about – a full time abstract conceptual artist. David has been recognized in both national and international juried shows and has shown his work in New York City galleries for juried shows.

David Levy‘s Artist Statement

Jasper Johns, a source of powerful inspiration has said, ”I don’t want my work to be an exposure of my feelings. ” For me, my abstract work is saturated with deep personal raw expression unafraid to expose fears, longing, disappointment, hope, aspiration, curiosity, joy and love. Art is my inner voice. And I have a lot to say. I capture these emotions via unique conceptual ideas in a style influenced by a mash-up of Johns, Kelly and Rauschenberg. The interrelated dynamics of hardedge forms, colors, lines, marks, surface, and positive and negative space provide me a visual language for expression. I use a diverse array of tools, including acrylics, oil sticks, markers, collage, combines/found objects, fabric sculpture and much more while working in both small and large formats mainly on birch cradles that I build in my studio.
