Cynthia Cummings Biography
Cynthia Cummings has over thirty years of artistic experience both professional and personal. Beginning with her first show at age seventeen, she had begun the process of artistic reflection that would expand her desire to incorporate mixed media and push her limits. Cynthia has a love of architecture and nature. Her activities include designing and building permanent structures both functional and artistic. Her sculptural style is influenced by what intrigues her visual aesthetic. What speaks to Cynthia visually either in nature or urban environments. Adding to her never ending quest for inspiration, Cynthia apprenticed as a furniture restorer in Santa Cruz, CA for a period of one year with professional artisan carpenter Michael McMurphy. This period further enhanced her wood working skills. As a self-taught welder, her work with various metal mediums further demonstrates a constant quest in creating furniture and sculptures that reflect how Cynthia sees the world around her.
Cynthia is a graduate of Sacramento State University in Sacramento, California. She started producing mixed media works of art as a freshman, while working as a store artist for Tower Records. She also created several pieces for local art galleries and private parties. In 2014, she started her own business designing and building custom signage and art work for local restaurants, cafes, and various small businesses. A permanent installation on display is a sign for Santiago’s Taqueria Restaurant in Blue Jay, CA. it consists of a found object a hood off a 77 Chevrolet truck with custom graphics designed by Cynthia and applied to hood.
Cynthia Cummings Artist Statement
I have created a collection of mixed media art pieces that highlights a combination of cohesive artisan wood work, welding and slip cast representational ceramic images. The color, grain, and types of woods were chosen to compliment and create a natural aesthetic for the viewer to get a sense of both nature and the representational impact of the ceramic piece.
My goal with this body of work was to create something I have never attempted while venturing out of my usual comfort zone of two dimensional still life work. Utilizing a variety of exotic hard woods to complement each ceramic piece with a natural flow I have assembled three dimensional art that shows a unique visual style with a sense of whimsy.
