Cynthia Coldren’s Biography

Abstract painter Cynthia Coldren explores contemporary concepts such as order and chaos, structure and ambiguity using acrylic paints, inks and mediums on canvas and paper. Working with diverse textures, tools and artistic elements, she visually considers how seemingly incompatible concepts come together with dynamic results. Her strong linear marks, bold brushstrokes, repeating patterns, and atmospheric glazes coalesce in vibrant compositions, revealing a visual tension that’s both appealing and exciting.

Cynthia studied fine art as an undergraduate student before completing her BAS in communications and management, supporting a corporate communications career. While her early work embraced photo-realism, she transitioned to an abstract style over the years, evolving a stronger thematic focus.

Cynthia lives in the Dallas, Texas area. She has received recognition and awards in recent art exhibitions, gallery shows and juried competitions both online and in North Texas, including the Texas Visual Art Association (TVAA, Dallas, TX), the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco (VAGF, Frisco, TX), and Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery (LST).

Cynthia Coldren’s Artist Statement

As a non-objective abstract artist, my acrylic mixed media paintings are explorations of color and space, line and texture. In blending and contrasting these artistic elements, images of spare landscapes, urban structures and geographic earth patterns are sources of inspiration. My creative process is both intentional and intuitive — deliberate shapes and marks become the framework for spontaneous changes. In layering acrylic paint, pencil and ink marks, hand-painted paper and translucent glazes, my goal is to create vivid, organic compositions with strong visual tension.

A predominant theme I explore is contradiction — the meeting of opposites like structure and ambiguity, order and chaos, simplicity and complexity. Because changes, interruptions, and surprises create anxiety for me, I continually consider how to embrace ambiguity and channel it for the better. My abstract art dramatizes these conflicts and allows me to visualize how seemingly incompatible things can work together beautifully.

I frequently use geometric shapes and repeating patterns in my paintings, weaving the familiar with the ambiguous. I believe this “joining of opposites” speaks to the world we live in and provides a more personal point of connection for the viewer.
