Bette Levine Biography
Bette Levine recently relocated from Colorado, and is now a full-time resident of Palm Springs. Photography has been part of her life since childhood, taking her small camera everywhere, and then learning film developing and darkroom techniques from her amateur-photographer father, “The emerging image was like magic, ” she recalls. Her mother was a canvas artist, and palette knife, brushes, and paint skills were equally exciting. Fast forward to this new age of digital photography and post-production and she now no longer has to choose which to work with – photography, or art. Now it all merges together: photo-art. The magic of the darkroom, the motion created by added a line, the attitude of a texture. Her work is displayed both online and in local art shows.
Bette Levine Artist Statement
My single goal, as a photographer, is to engage the viewer in a narrative. I want you to join me in the image, and be compelled by it to sense a story. An empty bench might be where someone is coming — or just left, perhaps will come back for what was left there, or perhaps intends to meet someone there. It is, without question, a most compelling subject for me. There are other seating arrangements I feel a need to photograph and share – somewhat like a living journal: people seated in the same space but seeming to be so far apart, or chairs lined up and either no longer of service or waiting for something to happen. I hope this collection sparks your curiosity to come into the scene. What’s the story?
