Best in Show (Traditional)
Pam Folsom

Cincinnati native Pam Folsom is nationally known for her vibrant, energetic oil paintings of familiar scenes, depicting everything from the rolling farmland of the Midwest to the beaches of Florida’s coast. Her award-winning works have appeared in numerous juried group, two-person, and solo exhibitions. Dozens of Pam’s paintings appear in private collections across the U.S., as well as the corporate collections. Pam is currently represented by Gingerbread Square Gallery in Key West, Florida; The Miller Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio; and B. Deemer in Louisville, Kentucky.

Artist Statement:

Color is my inspiration.  Placement, interpretation, and swirls of visible knife strokes climbing through the composition, forming texture, blending and making the edges of vibrant colors mesh.  The paintings are beyond reality, but believable. These paintings are about slowing down, drinking in the day, stopping, enjoying and finding the dialogue to express what I need to say.  Life is intoxicating if you take the time to notice. It is strictly out of selfishness that I paint; I enjoy it that much.  An hour passes, a day, however long it takes.  No Rules, no guidelines, just creating visual communication with others that appreciate the dialogue.

Please visit Pam's website if you are interested in purchasing this award winning piece or to see more of her work.

Marcia Berg Haskell

After retiring from spending over 40 years in the scientific and management fields, Marcia became interested in exploring her creative side. During the subsequent years, Marcia began to learn the possibilities involved in drawing and painting. She rapidly discovered that no single material or set of techniques satisfied her completely.

Today, Marcia uses her art to display her vision – her love of nature, it’s beauty, patterns, and incredible range of possibilities. – her love of the man-made, the power and possibilities of man’s structures and their interactions with the world around them. – her love of the non-physical, the possibilities of what never existed, the emotions of the inanimate, the communication of that which has no mouth or external sound. Her art has lead to the desire to show existence through the senses and emotions and has led her to concentrate on three forms of artistic endeavor: non-representational painting, her ‘fractured fotographs’, and views she captures through ‘realistic’ digital photographs.

In her painting, she use several mediums such as acrylics, inks, and watercolors, to create original work that conveys emotions, feelings and mood. The ‘fractured fotographs’ are computer manipulations of her ‘as taken’ photos to something that does not exist but is, instead, a changed form of beauty. She tries, through those pictures to reflect a more general truth about the subject and it’s interaction with the viewer. Marcia often tries to focus attention on parts of the whole that might not be noticed otherwise.

Over the years, her photography has focused more strongly on capturing the patterns around her: from nature; plants, animals, birds, flowers, trees and landscapes and from the man-made; structures such as buildings, unique industrial configurations, construction sites, and recreation sites such as golf courses or children’s playgrounds, and outdoor sculptures.

Lydia Kittle

As an artist I draw from my own life for inspiration. I use bright contrasting colors to convey the emotion and tone of my art. Someone once told me that the real story is all in the details. And that’s how I tell my stories whether on a canvas or through a lens. My favorite pieces are always the ones that people can relate to and create their own story while looking at mine.

Dianne is a passionate photographer forever chasing the next image in the floral world. An amateur who is forever striving for more knowledge about the light and composition of a potential photograph.

3rd Place (Traditional)
Hunter Jay

In his work, Hunter Jay aims to reveal the wonder of the hidden world around us. He likes to focus on the geometry of the composition, the way the elements are arranged on the canvas. Sometimes, he finds that this becomes more important than the actual subject matter. His work embraces an admiration of simplicity and evokes a contemplative and peaceful place.

Hunter Jay's paintings are created with multiple layers of transparent glazes. Each layer affects the next, creating an arresting depth of field. The final details are created with the finest natural liner brushes.

Largely self taught as a fine artist, Hunter Jay has an innate sense of composition that aligns with his background in graphic design, contributing to the overall illustrative impact of his work.

Honorable Mention (Traditional)
Mark Kaufman

After years as a practicing attorney focused on emergency protective services, I returned to the study of art being juried into the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Art certificate program. I am now a signature member of the Philadelphia and Baltimore and Delaware Watercolor societies. That is a delightful honor based on juried exhibition of my work in their international shows. I have exhibited all across the country from Philadelphia to Miami to California.

What makes my work unique is that the figures are explorations of mood and emotion rather than landscapes. Often they have an element of the odd or troubling. The figures are exposed and self contained and unavailable all at the same time. I draw heavily on my lifetime experience with Bipolar disorder seeking to express its effusive, if grandiose at times, unconstrained joy; its terrifying and fractured mania and its deep depression. I paint because I must.

I now live in Wilmington, Delaware with my wife of 48 years and my cat-named Cat.

Honorable Mention
(Digital & Photography)
John Ressler

Once upon a time John was a university prof—not in art but earth science and resource management. His academic specialty was landscape analysis, both physical and cultural landscapes. Before teaching he worked as a surveyor and cartographer, as a scientific illustrator, and as Preparator of Exhibits at Museum of Northern Arizona, building new exhibits from the ground up. During the latter years, he got interested in watercolor and casein. Many years later, retired from professing, there were two things he wanted to do: travel more and paint. As the most compactly portable of all the paint media, and having the most luminous colors, too, watercolor was the perfect fit! During his professing years John had numerous opportunities to explore the graphical capabilities of many computers and applications. Thematically, John’s tastes are pretty catholic, but he believes that a painting is more engaging if it implies a story and has an experimental component. In a somewhat cosmic sense, everything we see around us is an experiment--some successful, some not. Every painting is an experiment in design, composition, color, subject, and commentary. John’s art education, consisted of graduate-level coursework in scientific illustration, drawing, etching, and cartography at the Universities of Arizona and Oregon, as well as watercolor workshops from Gerald Brommer, Jerry Stitt, Tom Fong, Dale Laitenen, and Frank Eber.
